About Cookson & Son Ltd
In 1976 Antony Cookson left school to begin work as an apprentice electrician at MIC Installations on Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham. He attended Peoples College on Maid Marion Way to complete a four year electrical engineering course.
After two years at MIC Installations, Antony moved to Lumelec, where he worked in Bakers Oven and Pork Farms shops, concentrating mainly on air conditioning installations and maintenance. He also spent his time servicing air conditioning units in National Westminster Banks.
After two years at Lumelec, Antony left to work with his father, Clive Cookson, in his building business, carrying out numerous electrical rewires on domestic properties and hotels owned and run by Clive.
In the early 1990s
In the early 1990s the economy suffered a recession and Cookson Electrical was hit hard by losing the shop fitting contracts it had previously enjoyed success with. Antony re-grouped and returned to the domestic electrical work that had been the business’s backbone in the early days.

Up a good customer-base by word of mouth and recommendations, Cookson Electrical has gone from strength to strength.
In July 1998 Cookson Electrical joined the Electrical Contractors Association and became member of the Joint Industries Board (JIB).
In 1999 Antony’s son
Adam Cookson, joined the business. Adam started his electrical apprenticeship in 1999, attending Loughborough College for four years and completing his apprenticeship in 2003.
In 2005 the Part ‘P’ Building Regulations came into force and Cookson & Son Ltd soon became Part ‘P’ Registered to allow self-certification of all its own work.
Cookson & Son now carry out work in all sectors
In 2010 Cookson & Son started to branch out into the gate automation sector and as that side of the business started to grow, the business launched a new website and began to pick up business for gate automation, repairs, maintenance and new installations.
The business now provides bespoke steel and timber gates, barriers and hydraulic bollards and has customers including domestic property owners, schools, local councils, factories, warehouses and many blue chip companies.
By 2017
the business was employing four full-time electricians and gate engineers. The team is trained to the latest electrical regulations and also holds CAME certification for using gate automation equipment.
Antony is still with the business
He’s 42 years into the electrical business now and is mainly office based. Adam is now Project Manager and still on the tools when required. Antony’s partner and fiancé, Monique, has joined the business to keep the accounts in order.
